What Are the Fringes? The Meaning Behind the Borders of Our Garments

If you've looked closely at a ChoZen hoodie, jacket, or maxi dress, you've seen them: fringes sewn around the entire lower hem, crowned with a ribbon of blue. They're not decoration. They're not a trend. They're a commandment — and they're the reason the ChoZen Collection exists in the form it does.

The commandment

The instruction comes straight from Scripture:

"Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue: And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them..." — Numbers 15:38–39 (KJV)

Read that closely. The fringes have a job: that ye may look upon it, and remember. They are a physical, visible reminder — stitched into the garment itself — to remember the commandments and do them. Every time the hem moves, every time you catch it in the mirror, the garment preaches to the one wearing it.

Why the ribband is always blue

The Scripture doesn't leave the color to preference. The ribband upon the fringe is blue — every generation, every garment. At ChoZen the fringes themselves may coordinate with the outfit, but the ribbon above them is always a hue of blue, because that's what was commanded. When we say the brand is rooted in Scripture, this is what we mean: the details aren't ours to change.

How ChoZen wears the commandment

On our men's pieces — shirts, hoodies, jackets — the fringes run around the entire lower hem with the blue ribbon above them. On our women's pieces, the fringes and blue ribbon sit at the bottom hem of the maxi skirt or dress, falling at the top of the foot so they flow without dragging. You'll see them on the Signature Modest Set, the Deuteronomy 22:5 Maxi Dress, and the Signature Embossed Hoodie.

Why some pieces don't have them

If you've shopped our athletic and windbreaker line, you may have noticed those pieces come without fringes — and that's intentional, stated plainly in each listing. Performance wear moves, snags, and gets pulled through gym bags and bleachers; we'd rather leave the fringes off than treat the commandment casually. The pieces built to carry them, carry them properly.

Clothing that preaches without saying a word

Our founder built ChoZen after a season of health battles that would have broken most people — and the conviction that came out of it is simple: what you wear can testify. A garment with fringes in its borders isn't just modest, well-made clothing. It's a daily, wearable reminder of who you belong to and how you're called to walk.

That's the meaning behind the borders of our garments. Look upon it, and remember.
